Youth from Jorhat murdered and thrown into Brahmaputra river in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: A youth from Jorhat, Ashim Baruah, was pushed into the Brahmaputra river following an alleged argument over a mobile phone with a ‘chandal’.

Based on reports, Baruah on July 9, left Rituraj Hotel for Bhootnath Cremation area in the city at around 1 AM and has been missing since then.

Following the disappearance of Baruah, his family members lodged a complaint at Bharalumukh Police Station, following which police officials detained a ‘chandal’ on suspicion of being involved in Baruah’s murder case.

Baruah had allegedly handed over his phone to the chandal, identified as Bhagirath Sarkar.

Talking to G Plus, Manikant Chamuha, OC of Bharalumukh police station confirmed that during the police interrogation Sarkar confessed to pushing Baruah after an argument ensued between the two. After this, Baruah got carried away by the water current.  

NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed for a search operation in the river to recover the body. 

Baruah was a social media activist and used to monitor Zubeen Garg’s online fanbase. He was also the self-styled president of Zubeen Fan Club.
