Assam Braces For Second Phase Of LS Elections

 

GUWAHATI: The campaigning for the second phase of Lok Sabha elections came to an end in the evening of April 24 evening. The second phase polling with 61 candidates in the fray will be held on April 26 in five constituencies. The constituencies are Nagaon, Diphu, Darrang-Udalguri, Karimganj and Silchar.


Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee have actively participated in the campaign, lending their support to respective party candidates in Silchar (SC). The BJP's campaign, spearheaded by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and supported by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, has focused on highlighting the developmental schemes implemented by both the central and state governments. In contrast, opposition parties, led by state leaders like Lok Sabha Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi, Raijor Dal President Akhil Gogoi, and Assam Jatiya Parishad President Lurinjyoti Gogoi, have emphasised issues such as citizenship, connectivity, infrastructural development, unemployment, and price rise.

In Karimganj, a triangular contest is anticipated among sitting BJP MP Kripanath Malla, Congress's Hafiz Rashid Choudhury, and AIUDF's Sahibul Alam Choudhury, reflecting the diverse political landscape of the region. Similarly, in Silchar, the competition is expected to be triangular among Assam minister Parimal Suklabaidya of BJP, Surya Kanta Sarkar of Congress, and Radheyshyam Biswas of Trinamool Congress.

Diphu (ST) presents a unique scenario with only five candidates in the battle, including BJP's Amarsing Tisso and Joyram Engleng of Congress, indicating a potentially close contest. Meanwhile, Nagaon and Darrang-Udalguri constituencies are set for triangular and direct contests respectively, showcasing the variety of electoral dynamics across Assam.

With voter turnout expected to play a crucial role in determining the outcome, the political landscape of Assam is poised for a significant shift. The first phase saw a voter turnout of 78.25% which was among the highest in the country.
