Wild Elephant creates menace on the streets of Guwahati

GUWAHATI: A wild elephant was seen roaming the streets of Guwahati today, April 30. 

According to Assam state zoo authorities, the elephant came towards the city at around 3 a.m. from Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary.

"Currently, we are trying to bring the wild elephant towards the Assam State zoo cum Botanical gardens in Zoo road, but have not been successful so far. However, we are trying our best so that there is minimal damage," said Aparajita Borbora, Public Relations representative, Assam State Zoo. 

Zoo officials have also mentioned that the elephant entered the city via Hengrabari side. It was headed to Ganeshguri and now is going towards Ulubari in the city. 

Speaking to G Plus, Assam Forest Minister, Parimal Suklabaidya said, "I am taking stock of the situation and have directed other forest officials to take necessary action so that the elephant is kept safe. I will also speak to the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro) to make sure that there is smooth movement of traffic and everything is kept under control."

It must be noted that officials are considering tranquilising the animal.

UPDATE: The Assam Forest Minister, Parimal Suklabaidya has spoken to the officials of District Administration to make sure that there is smooth movement of traffic and everything is kept under control.

The wild elephant has now been transquilised.
