GUWAHATI: The Chenikuthi area was inundated on Thursday, November 21, following water spillage caused by ongoing operations of the Guwahati Jal Board (GJB) to establish citywide water supply connections. The incident, initially causing alarm among residents and commuters, was clarified as not being due to a pipe burst.

A senior GJB official confirmed, “It is not a major issue. I urge residents not to panic. We are trying to supply water through the newly laid connections. Due to this, there was a temporary shutdown, but the process extended as dirt accumulated in the dried pipes. The pipelines also filled with air, necessitating the flushing of excess water for uninterrupted services.”
The official explained that water spilling from loosened valves is due to air pressure in the pipelines. While supply has commenced in areas such as Amiyanagar and Geetanagar, services in hilly regions are expected to take more time. Next, the Lichubagan area is likely to get the water supply at the earliest.
The spillage caused significant inconvenience to commuters and pedestrians, raising concerns about safety and disruption. GJB officials assured that efforts are underway to streamline services and minimise further disruptions.
