WATCH: Assam Train Avoids Collision with Elephant Herd

GUWAHATI: The Kamrup Express, train number 15959, narrowly avoided a potential disaster on October 16, when it stopped in time to prevent a collision with a herd of around 60 elephants on the Guwahati-Lumding route.

The incident occurred at 8:37 PM between Habaipur and Lamsakhang stations, where alert loco pilots swiftly applied emergency brakes upon noticing the elephants crossing the tracks.

The train’s timely halt can be attributed to its Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS), which monitors up to 40 km on either side of the tracks and provides real-time updates to the locomotive team.

N.F. Railway has already installed IDS in several elephant corridors and plans further expansion.
