GUWAHATI: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, accompanied by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, formally submitted his nomination papers on March 26 as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Dibrugarh parliamentary constituency in Assam.
The nomination filing took place before Returning Officer Bikram Kairi, according to media reports.

Polling for the Dibrugarh constituency is scheduled for April 19, marking the initiation of the electoral process in Assam, which boasts a total of 14 Lok Sabha seats.
Alongside CM Sarma, Sonowal was joined by notable political figures including Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora, United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) leader Pramod Bodo, sitting BJP MLA and Union minister Rameswar Teli, and state party president Bhabesh Kalita.

Sonowal, currently serving as the Union Minister for Shipping, Ports, Waterways, and Ayush, has a history with the Dibrugarh constituency, having represented it in 2004 as an AGP candidate. In the upcoming elections, he will face competition from the United Opposition Front, Assam (UOFA) nominee Lurinjyoti Gogoi.
The first phase of polling in Assam will witness contests in five constituencies – Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Kaziranga, and Sonitpur.
