GUWAHATI: The U-turn on the National Highway near the BJP office in Lalmati, Guwahati, has been permanently closed following a series of fatal accidents that raised serious safety concerns.

The decision has arrived after several incidents in the past few weeks, including a collision involving a dumper truck and three other vehicles, which resulted in two fatalities. A few days earlier, Officer-in-Charge of Ghograpar Police Station, Birinchi Das, lost his life in a similar accident at the same location.
Following these accidents, an urgent joint inspection was conducted by the police department, traffic police, transport department, and a crash investigation team. After evaluating the site, authorities determined that the U-turn posed a risk to commuters, and closed the U-turn permanently to prevent further accidents and fatalities.
While many residents and daily commuters have welcomed the closure, considering it a necessary step to ensure public safety, there has been some concern over the potential inconvenience. The lack of an alternative U-turn in the vicinity may cause disruptions for those who rely on this route for daily travel.
