APCC Stages Protest In Guwahati Against ED Action On Sonia And Rahul Gandhi

GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Wednesday, April 16, staged a large-scale protest in Guwahati against the Enforcement Directorate’s recent chargesheet against senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case. The protest was part of a nationwide campaign by the Indian National Congress.

Guwahati’s protest was led by APCC President Bhupen Borah, as thousands of Congress leaders and workers gathered outside the ED office on G.S. Road, raising slogans against what they described as “politically motivated actions” by central agencies under the BJP-led government. The demonstration was conducted to denounce the alleged misuse of investigative agencies for political objectives.

Bhupen Borah stated in particular that the ED was being used as a tool to target opposition leaders. He added that the Congress party would not accept such actions and would continue to stand by its senior leadership. “The kind of political planning being carried out against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi is unacceptable,” he told reporters.

Congress leader Ripun Bora criticised the government as well, stating that institutions like the ED and CBI were being used to carry out political vendetta. He warned that such actions could undermine the democratic process. “To protect constitutional organisations and safeguard democracy, we have come out to protest,” Bora said.

The protest in Guwahati has mirrored similar demonstrations held across several states. In New Delhi, Congress leaders attempting to march toward the party headquarters were briefly detained by police after reportedly breaching barricades.

Meanwhile, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary (Organisation), K.C. Venugopal, stated that all Pradesh Congress Committees had been mobilised to organise state-level protests. The party described the actions of the ED as a form of “state-sponsored crime” under the guise of law.
