GUWAHATI: In a joint operation with the forest department, the customs department and police arrested two individuals in Moran, Dibrugarh district, on Monday, February 17 for illegal possession of a leopard hide and bones.

Madhurjya Sonowal was reportedly caught red-handed in Gospuria, Moran while attempting to sell wildlife contraband. Acting on a tip-off, the authorities apprehended him and seized the animal parts. During questioning, Sonowal disclosed that he had allegedly received the items from Pankaj Baruah, who had promised him ₹2 lakh in exchange for completing the sale.
Talking to GPlus, a senior police official from Moran said, “The individuals have been apprehended in possession of the skin and bones. Investigations are underway.”
Both accused have been charged under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The leopard (Panthera pardus) is classified under Schedule I of the Act, granting it the highest level of protection. Possession or trade of its body parts carries severe legal consequences, including imprisonment and hefty fines.
