According to the report, Assam ranks third with 420 bird species recorded, following Uttarakhand (426 species) and West Bengal (538 species) as the top two states.
This ranking shows Assam's significant avian diversity, which is further supported by its status as a biodiversity-rich region, home to approximately 950 bird species and numerous Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs).
However, it is essential to note that while Assam shows a strong bird count, certain studies have reported alarming declines in specific bird populations within the state, such as a 72% decrease in species at the Bordoibam Bilmukh Bird Sanctuary over 27 years.
The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) 2024, which took place from February 16 to 19, engaged numerous participants across India, including those at IIT Guwahati. This year's event saw over 2,180 birdwatchers documenting a remarkable 1,036 species throughout the country, with Assam recording 420 species, ranking third among Indian states
