Transgender association takes out a rally in city against Govt. inaction

The Transgender association of Assam took out a pride & protest rally in the city on Sunday to protest against non implementation of the NALSA verdict. The Supreme Court of India after hearing the petition filed by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), passed a historic judgement on Transgender Rights on April 15, 2014 and stated – “Recognition of transgender as a third gender is not a social or medical issue but a human rights issue.” However, despite the SC ruling, the present Government has chosen not to implement the same which is being seen as a violation of SC judgment on Third-Gender. Bhrigu Borthakur, writing to G Plus said that, ‘the lack of implementation of the NALSA verdict indirectly shows that they (Govt.) consider themselves superior than Supreme Court.’ Another cause for the rally is also to sensitize the society and to end the discrimination faced by them. The transgender community continues to be subject of social humiliation and alleged Police harassment. The All Assam Transgender Association took out the rally with the help of the NGO Care U 365.
