Three From Assam Conferred With Padma Shri Awards 2023

GUWAHATI: Assam’s Hemoprova Chutia, Hem Chandra Goswami and Ramkuiwangbe Jene have been conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri Awards for the year 2023 by President Droupadi Murmu in the Darbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhawan on Wednesday.

Hemoprova Chutia (Art), Hem Chandra Goswami (Art) and Ramkuiwangbe Jene (Social Work) were selected in recognition of their respective contributions in the field of art, social work and public affairs from Assam.

President Droupadi Murmu presented three Padma Vibhushan, four Padma Bhushan and 47 Padma Shri Awards at an investiture ceremony in Darbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhawan in the presence of Vice President of India, Prime Minister, Union Minister for Home Affairs and other dignitaries. 

A total of nine individuals from the northeast were conferred with the Padma Shri awards.

The list of recipients from Northeast India includes Hemoprova Chutia, Hem Chandra Goswami and Ramkuiwangbe Newme from Assam, Thounaojam Chaoba Singh and K Shanathoiba Sharma from Manipur, Bikram Bahadur Jamatia and Narendra Chandra Debbarma from Tripura, Neihunuo Sorhie and Moa Subong from Nagaland, K C Runremsangi from Mizoram, Tula Ram Upreti from Sikkim, Risingbor Kurkalang from Meghalaya and Karma Wangchu from Arunachal Pradesh.

The Padma Awards are one of the highest civilian awards of India and are given in three categories, which are the ‘Padma Vibhushan’, the ‘Padma Bhushan’ and the ‘Padma Shri’. The names of the awardees are announced by the Government of India on the occasion of Republic Day each year and the awards are presented to the recipients by the President of India in a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
