“Demonstrating courage, determination and passion, Sreelakshmi has embarked on a pioneering journey in a field traditionally dominated by men,” Assam Rifles posted on their official X account. “Assam Rifles looks forward to seeing more women follow in her inspiring footsteps.”

This development has marked a unique milestone in the 188-year-old history of India’s oldest paramilitary force, as Assam Rifles has long remained a male-dominated force in certain specialised fields, where women currently constitute approximately 4.01% of its total strength.

Sreelakshmi’s entry into the demanding domain of dog handling is being viewed as a strong message on the evolving role of women in India’s uniformed services.

Dog handling in paramilitary operations plays a critical role in security, detection, and patrolling duties, requiring not just physical strength but also discipline, trust, and training.
