One individual, identified as Moon Kalita, has been arrested, while several others involved in the incident remain absconding.
As per the complaint, members of the group allegedly stormed into a business establishment operated by a member of the Rashtriya Bajrang Dal. The victim, Bishal Nath, was subjected to physical and mental harassment, as he was forced to repeatedly stand up and sit down while holding his ears — an act that was recorded and widely circulated on social media.
“This isn’t the first time we have suffered from their attacks,” a personnel told reporters. “In the name of Bir Lachit, they have been attacking the non-Assamese people for a year now. The members have specifically targeted Bengalis and Marwaris in the area.”
“Now, they have demanded ₹50,000 from Bishal Nath,” he asserted.
“They threatened to beat me,” Nath, meanwhile, shedded more light on the topic. “They warned me that as a Bengali, I will not be able to survive here for long.”
Relatedly, the Bir Lachit Sena has also previously faced allegations in cases involving honey-trapping, misconduct with journalists, and disrespect towards artists. Police authorities have launched operations to trace the absconding members and stated that efforts are ongoing to ensure further arrests in connection with the case.
