State Election Commission Denies Receiving Assam Govt's Request to Postpone BTC Polls

GUWAHATI: State election commission (SEC) has denied receiving any communication from the Government of Assam to postpone Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) election.

Earlier, the Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing the media said, “The health department has requested the SEC to postpone or put on hold the BTC elections as the State is grappling with COVID-19 cases. We have asked the Election Commission to withdraw the Model Code of Conduct or else we will face severe health emergency.”

"We are at present facing oxygen crisis.  We will not be able to manage if COVID-19 cases continue to rise," he further added.

However, the SEC Commissioner informed G Plus, "I am not aware of receiving any offical communication from the government as of now. So, won't be able to comment on this".

This development comes at the same time when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Minister of State for Urban Development and Health and Family Welfare, Pijush Hazarika faced backlash for organising a massive rally at Goibari Constituency, Tamulpur for the BTC elections.
