Six women ministers in Modi's new government

GUWAHATI: Altogether six women ministers, including senior BJP leaders Nirmala Sitharaman, Smriti Irani and Shiromani Akali Dal's Harsimrat Kaur Badal have found a place in the new Modi government that took oath on May 30.

Nirmala Sitharaman (60) is one of the six women who was sworn-in as part of the new government. In the last NDA government, she was appointed as the Defence Minister in September 2017.

On the other hand, Smriti Irani (43), who defeated Congress chief Rahul Gandhi from the Congress bastion of Amethi, was also sworn-in as a Cabinet minister in the new government. She previously held a number of portfolios including Human Resource Development ministry.

Among other woman ministers, Harsimrat Kaur Badal (53) has secured a ministerial berth for the second consecutive term in PM Modi’s Cabinet.

Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti (52) was sworn-in as a Minister of State. In the outgoing Modi government, she held the portfolio of Minister of State for Food Processing Industries.

Renuka Singh Saruta (58), a tribal leader of the BJP from Chattisgarh, was sworn-in as a Minister of State in the Modi government. She was a former minister in the Raman Singh government.

Deboshree Chowdhury, a first time MP, has also been inducted in the new Modi government. She has taken oath as a Minister of State.
