During his visit to BCPL on Saturday, March 22, the chief minister raised concerns over the financial health of the company, and cited its heavy dependence on bank loans, which has put the project in a difficult position.

“BCPL is facing a tough road ahead because of the ₹500 crore loss it has been making annually for the last two years,” Sarma said. “If they continue borrowing from banks like, the company will face major problems in the days to come.”

Acknowledging that government support may persist in the short term, he stressed that a robust revival plan is crucial, and emphasised the need for a sustainable financial strategy to ensure the long-term viability of BCPL.

BCPL, often referred to as the Assam Gas Cracker Project, is a major industrial initiative in Northeast India. It operates as a joint venture in which GAIL (India) Limited holds a dominant 70% share, while the Government of Assam, Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), and Oil India Limited (OIL) collectively own the remaining 30% equity.
