According to a recent report by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, the data has highlighted Assam’s slow-paced work culture, as the national working time in India is approximately 422 minutes, which equates to around seven hours per day.
In contrast, Daman and Diu report the highest working hours at 668 minutes (approximately 11 hours), followed by Dadra and Nagar Haveli at 608 minutes (around 10 hours). Delhi records an average of 496 minutes (roughly 8.3 hours).
Shamika Ravi, a member of the council, highlighted regional disparities in work habits and economic activity across the Northeast, as Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Sikkim also recorded some of the shortest working hours in India.
The trend has been particularly noticed in rural areas. People in Nagaland work an average of 343 minutes per day, while in Assam, it is 348 minutes. Urban areas also reflect similar patterns, with Assam recording an average of 381 minutes of work per day.
Besides the Northeast, Goa, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Bihar are also listed among the regions with relatively shorter working hours. Manipur and Meghalaya rank among the lowest in urban work hours, with 363 minutes and 375 minutes, respectively, followed by Assam at 381 minutes.
Although Sikkim stands out with slightly longer work hours compared to its Northeastern counterparts, the overall data has suggested that workdays in the Northeast are shorter than the national average.
