GUWAHATI: A low-cost, hand-held device to detect bacteria instantaneously without the time consuming cell culture and microbiological assays has been developed by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati.
A spokesperson for the institute said that this development will enable rapid detection of bacteria, which is important in healthcare but also in other avenues such as anti-bioterrorism measures and environmental monitoring applications.

The research team is led by Professor Parameswar K Iyer of department of chemistry and Professor Siddhartha S Ghosh from the department of biosciences and bioengineering of the institute.
Others involved in the project include Dr. Anamika Dey, Dr. Ashish Singh and Dr. Deepanjalee Dutta.
