Gauhati HC Issues Notice To Assam Government Over Kamakhya Temple Access Corridor

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has taken cognisance of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the proposed construction of the 'Maa Kamakhya Temple Access Corridor' and has issued a notice to the Assam government. The PIL, filed before the division bench comprising Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi and Justice Suman Shyam, seeks to preserve the original structure of the Kamakhya Temple and ensure that construction activities do not disturb its sanctity.

The plea also urges the state authorities to obtain necessary approvals and clearance from the Department of Archaeology under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 1958, before proceeding with the construction of the corridor.

During the hearing, senior advocate Shobha Gupta, representing the petitioners, raised concerns about the proposed construction activities, citing potential damage to the temple's original structure. She highlighted that the Kamakhya Temple holds significant national and international importance, and any alteration to its structure could have adverse consequences.

Gupta emphasised that the deities in the Kamakhya Temple are natural formations, not manually installed statues. Any damage to these natural formations would be irreversible, posing a threat to the sanctity of the temple. She expressed concerns about excavation and broadening of staircases, which could potentially harm the natural elements of the temple.
