GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted scattered to fairly widespread rainfall and thunderstorms over parts of Assam.

"With the weather changing from winter to summer, there is natural instability in the atmosphere leading to high wind and development of thunder clouds. This phenomenon, also known as bordoisila, marks the onset of monsoon in the state," informed Sanjay Shaw, Director of Guwahati Meteorological Centre.

Bordoichila or pre-monsoon rains normally occur from March to April, although their arrival is often difficult to predict. Their intensity can range from light showers to heavy and persistent thunderstorms.

Shaw further added that more rain can be expected in the city and nearby areas over a period of three months.

"We are expecting light to moderate rains over the next few days with certain pockets experiencing gushing wind and thunderstorms. However, there's no expectation of heavy rainfall at the moment," he told G Plus.

On April 9, a severe cyclonic storm lashed several parts of Assam, uprooting trees and electricity poles and blowing away tin roofs across the state. The heavy rain was accompanied by gushing wind and hailstorm in many parts of the state. It also led to power cuts due to damages caused.
