Projects Worth ₹645 Crore Announced For Waterways In Assam

GUWAHATI: In a recent move to bolster waterway infrastructure and connectivity in Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India, has announced a substantial investment of over ₹645 crore for the development of 10 waterways projects under the Sagarmala programme.

These projects, part of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways' flagship initiative, aim to enhance terminals and riverine infrastructure along the Brahmaputra River (National Waterways 2) to stimulate economic growth and connectivity across the region.

The projects, which will receive 100% financial assistance from the central government, encompass a range of initiatives designed to improve transportation efficiency and facilitate connectivity. The proposals range from the construction of slipways at strategic locations such as Maya Ghat in Dhubri district to the establishment of passenger terminals at various districts including Ghagor in North Lakhimpur and Bahari in Barpeta.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal emphasised the government's commitment to harnessing the potential of waterways to promote economic development and alternative modes of transportation. The government aims to tap into the Brahmaputra river's potential to boost connectivity, upgrade public transportation, and spur economic growth.
