BIMSTEC or the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation is a regional grouping of countries on the rim of the Bay of Bengal which includes Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal and Bhutan.

Dignitaries from all these countries have been invited for Modi’s swearing in ceremony. In addition to this, the president of Kyrgyzstan, Sooronbay Jeenbekov and the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth, have also been invited to attend the oath ceremony on May 30.

Notably, Pakistan and its key ally, China have not been invited given the current tensions between the former and India.
