Parliament Adjourned, Citizenship (Amendment) Bill not tabled at Rajya Sabha

GUWAHATI: The much-debated Citizenship Amendment Bill failed to be presented/tabled at the Rajya Sabha. Speculations emerged that the bill would be passed today.

However, sources in New Delhi revealed that the Bill was not discussed because there was a disruption on the Parliament floor. It was also revealed that the bill will be likely be discussed on the 7th or 8th of February 2019.

Addressing a joint sitting of both Houses in Central Hall President Ram Nath Kovind said that the Citizenship Amendment Bill will ease the way in which India's citizenship is obtained by those who have been forced to flee to India in the cause of harassment. They have no faults in it, but they are a victim of the circumstances.

While the bill was not discussed today, it is evident that the bill will be passed one way or the other - either through voting or via an ordinance.

The government was expected to make another push for getting the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, triple talaq bill passed in the Rajya Sabha, where it is pending. There was a major discussion among party leaders of Congress, JD (U)among others about voting against the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

The budget session began today and will continue till February 13 with an interim budget to be presented on February 1.
