GUWAHATI: The official slogan "Awesome Assam" of Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) is about to get a new meaning on Friday, September 27 when the global community will celebrate World Tourism Day.

According to ATDC Chairman Jayanta Malla Baruah, this year's World Tourism Day will get an added impetus by incorporating some novel ideas.

The prime attraction or the novel approach to be brought about this time would be the roping in of Outlook and Instagram, which will add a new dimension to the entire venture.

The Tourism department will organise an effective and fruitful session at the river cruise Alfresco Grand on September 28, which is a collaborative event with Outlook group titled ‘’Maximum Assam, Minimum Impact.’’

Instagram had involved itself in promoting Japan tourism. A similar project would be started as #Discover Assam through which Insta users who have been posting pictures of beautiful tourist destinations of Assam will get a platform to showcase their enthusiasm for photography as well as passion to place their homeland at a global stage. The verified Insta handle of ‘’Awesome Assam’’ will be published and #Discover Assam will be unveiled in order to attract more tourists by branding Assam globally.

The main event of the day will be organized at Srimanta Sankardeva International Auditorium (Kalashetra) from 1pm. The occasion will be graced by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Tourism Minister of Assam Chandan Brahma will be the guest of honour, while Jayanta Malla Baruah and Principal Secretary Tourism department Rajesh Prasad will take part in the open session from 4pm and a cycling event will also be held which would start from Dighali Pukhuri area in the city prior to these programmes.

ATDC Chairman added in a press meet that there are many colleges like IHM which try to bring out the keeda (drive)of tourism in students. There will be an effort to involve these students this time so that they can work for the development of the tourism sector of Assam.

The promotion of Assamese culture, traditions and tourist destinations of the state will be done through a photography competition, a short film and write-up competition. The awards for these competitions will be distributed on that day itself. Students of tourism courses would be involved in a skit and quiz competition.

Most importantly, it seems to be a time when one of the most celebrated occasions in Assam, the Raax Mahotsav will be put on the national as well as international stage. The Raax Mahotsav of Majuli and Nalbari will be the focus area this time and an effort has been made to promote them by inviting tourists as well as the unemployed youth of Assam to spread the significance of Raax. The official logo of Raax Mahotsav will be unveiled on this auspicious occasion.

The Tourism department had initiated a project called Amar Alohi under which twenty eight home stays were built for tourists. The home stays will be released officially on that day. The occasion will be made interesting through a display of beautiful cultural evening exploring various cultural, traditional and ethnic forms of Assam.

In short, Assam is going to take another step forward in making its presence felt at both the national and international level.
