GUWAHATI: The Assam government on Monday said the state will not be a part of the proposed nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC) if the Supreme Court allows reverification of 20 per cent names in border districts of the recently published document.

While addressing a press conference on December 23, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the state does not accept the existing NRC, the final list of which was published on August 31 this year with over 19 lakh exclusions.

The minister said, “We want to be part of the pan-India NRC, however, if that is not happening we already have a petition in the Supreme Court where we have sought 20% re-verification of the names in the bordering districts. We have been maintaining that we are not satisfied with the NRC.”
