GUWAHATI: The Northeastern Universities Students' fraternity has called for a total shutdown of all the universities and colleges in Northeast India on January 22.

The call for the 'shutdown' comes after Supreme Court of India has scheduled to hear petitions challenging the constitutionality of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on January 22.

The fraternity believes that the Act will bring in repercussions on the indigenous masses of the North Eastern states.

According to reports, universities in the Northeast, Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University, North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tezpur University, Assam Women's University (AWU), Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Nagaland University, Rajiv Gandhi University, Cotton University among others will remain closed.
