GUWAHATI: State health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 23 said that there is no scientific evidence to establish that newspapers can spread coronavirus.

“Had it been so, the Government of India would have closed down all newspapers. We too do not have any advisory from the Central government regarding newspapers,” Sarma said while addressing the media.

The minister further went on to say that if newspaper can carry the virus then even tea packets or milk pouches are not safe since they can carry the virus too.

Talking about the circulation of fake messages on social media especially WhatsApp, Sharma said that one should not believe in any information that is being spread in such platforms.

When asked if the government is planning on any action against those circulating fake messages. “Origin of a lot of such messages is being traced to foreign countries and it will be an uphill task to trace them,” he said.
