The decision follows an in-depth assessment by NHIDCL’s bridge experts. In a letter dated October 1, 2024, Gaurang Deoghare, Deputy General Manager of NHIDCL Silchar, informed the Cachar District Commissioner about the new weight limit and emphasized the need for strict enforcement.

Previously, the permissible weight had been set at 40 tonnes as per a directive issued on September 28, 2024. However, further analysis led to the revision to ensure the long-term safety and durability of the bridge.

The NHIDCL stressed that this measure is vital to ensure public safety and preserve the functionality of the Gammon Bridge, which serves as a major transportation route in the region. The Cachar district administration has been urged to instruct the appropriate authorities to rigorously implement the new weight restrictions.
