GUWAHATI: The Indian Railways is set to install the indigenous Kavach 4.0 automatic train protection system on 10,000 locomotives across its countrywide network to enhance passenger safety. A key stretch of approximately 1,966 kilometres, from Malda Town in West Bengal to Dibrugarh in Assam, has additionally been identified for the rollout of Kavach 4.0.

Developed by the Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO), the system is designed to prevent accidents by controlling over-speeding and ensuring trains do not pass signals at danger.

Following a successful trial of Kavach 4.0 on a 108 km section of the West Central Railway, the railways are now gearing up to implement the upgraded system in mission mode, replacing older versions installed in existing locomotives.

In case of driver error, Kavach automatically activates the train’s braking system, particularly useful in adverse weather conditions.

Kavach has been certified with the highest safety integrity level (SIL-4) by independent assessors, underscoring its reliability.
