GUWAHATI: Students from the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) called on Congress President, Rahul Gandhi over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill issue and urged him and his party to take part in the debate in Rajya Sabha over the issue. They requested Gandhi’s party to not back down from taking part in the debate. The NESO is a delegation of student bodies of all the Northeastern states.

Speaking to the press in New Delhi, Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya, chief advisor of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) said that they have met Congress president on February 4 to express their demand to scrap the bill and urged the Congress to take appropriate action to prevent the bill from passing in the Rajya Sabha.

He added that this Bill will jeopardize the existence of the indigenous people of the entire northeast region and will nullify the essence of the hard-earned Assam Accord, 1985 and the basic tenets of the Indian Constitution.

The student delegation has also submitted a memorandum to the Congress president.

It should be noted that the Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on January 8 but was stalled in the Rajya Sabha on January 9.
