The case first came to light on February 15, when the 1098 Child Helpline received a report from the victim's family. The Child Helpline Unit and District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) of Morigaon assisted the family in registering a First Information Report (FIR) at Jagiroad Police Station. This initiated a formal investigation into the matter.
During the investigation, it was found that the minor had been trafficked by a group of individuals and later sold to a family in Rajasthan, where she was forced into marriage. The accused, along with his family members, absconded from their residence in Digaru, Sonapur, shortly after the FIR was lodged, which added a layer of complexity to the investigation.
However, authorities from the Jagiroad Police Station continued the investigation with sustained efforts. Regular follow-ups and coordination were maintained by the Child Helpline Unit to ensure the case did not lose priority. After nearly a month of tracking and intelligence gathering, the minor was located and rescued from the outskirts of Jaipur.
The rescue was facilitated through the intervention of the Additional Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Child Protection Officer (DCPO).
The minor has since been brought back to Assam and reunited with her family. Officials have confirmed that she is currently undergoing counselling and medical examination as per standard procedures.
Authorities have also stated that efforts are ongoing to trace and apprehend the traffickers involved in the case.
