GUWAHATI: A protest rally opposing the Waqf Act turned violent in Silchar’s Chamra Godam area on Sunday, April 13 as clashes broke out between demonstrators and police. The unrest has heightened tensions in the region, coming just ahead of the Panchayat elections.

The rally, reportedly held without official permission, began peacefully but quickly escalated when a group of protesters confronted law enforcement personnel stationed at the scene. As some individuals allegedly began pelting stones, police responded with a mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd. A few police officers sustained injuries during the altercation.
Senior officials and authorities of Cachar rushed to the site to take control of the situation.
With local elections approaching, authorities remain on high alert to maintain law and order.
This incident of violence comes after the claim by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that, because of cooperation between minority leaders and Assam police to ensure that there was no incident of violence in Assam. Only three places saw protests, with 150 people at each.
