Assam To Launch Year-Long Celebration For Bhupen Hazarika’s Birth Centenary

 

GUWAHATI: The Assam cabinet has approved a year-long celebration to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika from September 8 to the next year, until the same date.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this on his X handle following the state cabinet meeting held on Saturday, April 12.

To facilitate this development, the cabinet resolved to set up a 50-member Centenary Celebration Committee headed by the chief minister, along with other distinguished personalities.

Additionally, celebratory events will be held in Guwahati, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Arunachal Pradesh. An institution will also be renamed in honour of the late music legend.

Furthermore, a biography and documentaries on Hazarika will be produced in multiple languages. A proposal will also be pursued for issuing a commemorative coin in his name.

In a related development, the cabinet sanctioned ₹250 crore to the Assam Cancer Care Foundation and approved 10 new co-districts to strengthen decentralised governance.
