The movie, The Accidental Prime Minister has created numerous controversies since its trailer launch and now, the Meghalaya Congress has reportedly objected to its public release in the state. The movie is based on Manmohan Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014.
The Congress party has alleged that the film is BJP’s propaganda against them ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. In the movie, Manmohan Singh (played by Anupam Kher) is portrayed as a hapless victim of Congress party politics and Sonia Gandhi’s controlling behaviour. The movie is based on the book of the same name by Sanjaya Baru, who served as Singh's media adviser from 2004 to 2008.
The release of the film’s trailer has caused an uproar in many parts of the country with Congress leaders all over raising their concerns against the movie.
According to a report by The Shillong Times, Ampareen Lyngdoh, a senior Congress leader from Meghalaya has even gone on to say that the characters of the movie are fictional. She added that she hasn’t seen the movie but presumes that since it has kicked up a controversy, it should be banned. She also said that filmmakers cannot misuse the art form of storytelling to malign reputation of respectable citizens of the country irrespective of their positions in the society. She added that releasing and making the movie is disrespectful and ethically wrong and she objects to its public release in the country.
