GUWAHATI: The Assam Government officially declared that May 13 will be observed annually as the ‘Day Against Superstitious Beliefs’ in the state to honour the contributions of Birubala Rabha. She passed away on May 13, 2024, was an advocate for social change and played a crucial role in combating harmful superstitions in society.
On this day, the Health and Family Welfare Department will develop content to address common health-related superstitions. Similarly, the Panchayat and Rural Development Department will organise special Gram Sabhas across the state, inviting local experts, including doctors, educators, and social workers, to discuss the dangers of superstitions. The Women and Child Development Department, in partnership with non-governmental organisations and community-based groups, will hold awareness meetings and campaigns at the district, ICDS project, and Anganwadi centre levels.
Furthermore, the Science and Technology Department, in collaboration with the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTE), will implement activities through the Aryabhatta Science Centres and various eco-clubs across the state.
All other state departments will also take part in this initiative, implementing relevant activities to promote the awareness of scientific and rational thought.
