GUWAHATI: A 41-year-old man's attempt to open an emergency door mid-flight on a Guwahati-Agartala flight has been attributed to his battle with depression, according to police reports on Friday.
The individual, identified as Biswajit Debnath, a resident of Jirania in West Tripura, was taken into custody on charges of "endangering the lives of hundreds of passengers" and engaging in an altercation with the flight crew while onboard, as stated by Abhijit Mandal, the officer in charge of the Airport Police Station in Agartala.
The investigation revealed that Debnath confessed to suffering from depression and attempting to open the emergency door mid-air with the intent of jumping from the aircraft, explained the police officer.
The incident occurred around 1 PM on September 21, approximately 15 miles from the runway of Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala. The prompt response of the flight crew and fellow passengers thwarted the attempt, and the aircraft landed safely, according to reports.
Debnath is scheduled to appear before a court on Friday, Mandal confirmed to the media. Further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
