Lok Sabha Elections: Rahul Gandhi to campaign in Assam, might target CAB

GUWAHATI: Congress president Rahul Gandhi is set to start campaigning in Assam on April 3 and 4 ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

During his campaign, Gandhi will address rallies in Kaliabor and Lakhimpur constituencies- which are both located in Brahmaputra Valley. He will also address another rally in Karimganj.

As per reports, the Congress president might bring up the issue of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 seeks to amend the Citizenship Act 1955 by making Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan to become eligible for Indian citizenship.

The Bill proposes to relax the norms of a person to apply for citizenship by relaxing the 11- year requirement for residing in India to six years for people belonging to the earlier mentioned six religious communities.

It saw widespread protests from many organisations across the state and the Congress has been opposing the Bill.
