Locals Protest Against Govt's Move to Mow Down Trees for Guwahati-North Guwahati Bridge

GUWAHATI: Guwahati residents staged a protest against the Assam government’s move to cut down trees for the construction of a bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting North Guwahati.

Around 300 people staged the protest on the bank of the mighty river at Machkhowa area by forming a human chain as part of “Save Tree and Riverfront” campaign.

At the time when the Assam govt is promoting to balance out the enviroment by planting more trees, as many as 200 trees will be felled, most of which stand tall at the Sankardev Park.

It is to be mentioned that earlier, a citizens’ forum had submitted a memorandum to Minister for Public Works Department, Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressing their concerns, however, the government did not respond to the plea.
