GUWAHATI: A significant portion of the Silchar-Saurastra East-West corridor in the challenging terrain of the Dima Hasao hill district is nearing completion, marking a crucial step toward enhanced connectivity between Silchar and the rest of the country.

An official statement on Thursday highlighted the ongoing construction of the East-West corridor's Nirimbanglo-Harangajao stretch in the hill district, emphasising the utilisation of advanced Japanese technology to expedite the project's timeline.

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee reportedly envisioned the East-West corridor as a transformative project, aiming to facilitate smoother connectivity. However, the mega road project has faced prolonged delays, particularly in Dima Hasao district in southern Assam, spanning over two decades.

While substantial progress has been achieved in other parts of India, two critical stretches have experienced delays—the Balacherra-Harangajao portion in Dima Hasao and Cachar districts and the Nirimbanglo-Harangajao stretch within Dima Hasao district. Originally scheduled for completion in 2007, the 3,300 km road project faced setbacks.

The current focus is on the Nirimbanglo-Harangajao road, covering approximately 49 km, utilising cutting-edge Japanese technology. The project has been entrusted to Dinesh Chandra Agrawal Infracon Private Limited, based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
