Japanese Student Commits Suicide In IIT Guwahati

GUWAHATI: In an unfortunate incident, a student of Japanese national allegedly committed suicide by hanging in a hostel room of IIT- Guwahati on November 21.

According to reports, student identified as Koto Onoda was found hanging inside Lohit Hostel’s room number E143.Onoda was pursuing Bio-Science/Bio-Engineering.

Speaking to Labanu Konwar, Public Relation Officer (PRO) of IIT- Guwahati said, "His friends tried to contact him but his phone was not reachable, hence they contacted the hostel warden, upon reaching his room- Onoda was found hanging in the hostel room.

Onada was in IIT-Guwahati for a 3 months internship program and was scheduled to return to Japan on 30th November, 2019. 

However, the reason behind his suicide is yet to be ascertained. In the meanwhile police is in the process of sending the body for post-mortem.

Meanwhile, fire continues to engulf the North bank of Guwahati where hundreds of students carried out a silent candle-march protest for one of a professor, who is allegedly being targeted by the IIT administration for being a whistle-blower and revealing illegal activities of higher-ups in the institution including the Director of IIT-G.

Earlier this month, Fathima Latheef, a student from IIT Madras committed suicide and left a message on her phone naming professors who had allegedly pushed her to take the drastic step.
