GUWAHATI: Mystery shrouds the death of an elephant deployed for tourist safaris within Kaziranga National Park in Assam.

'Lakhimala' died in the intervening night of April 22 and April 23, according to reports.

The tusker, a beloved presence at the Bagori range safari, succumbed to unexplained circumstances, raising concerns among park visitors and wildlife enthusiasts.

According to her mahout, 'Lakhimala' had been ailing for an extended period, experiencing difficulties in eating and drinking.

However, allegations have surfaced, suggesting a potential cover-up by both the elephant's owner and park authorities regarding the circumstances leading to its death following an alleged attempt to transport the carcass out of the park by truck overnight.

Grieving local residents offered floral tributes and 'gamusa' to commemorate ‘Lakhimala's memory.

Investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to the elephant’s death.
