Assam: Amritpal Singh Facilitated To File Nomination For Lok Sabha Elections From Dibrugarh Jail

GUWAHATI: The Punjab Government informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court that Amritpal Singh, currently detained under the National Security Act (NSA) in Dibrugarh Jail of Assam, has been facilitated to file his nomination for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Justice Vinod S. Bhardwaj noted that the prayers made in the petition had been complied with, rendering the petition "infructuous." Deputy Advocate General (DAG) Punjab, Arjun Sheoran, told the court that Amritpal Singh, who leads 'Waris Punjab De,' was allowed to meet with his proposer and advocate at the Dibrugarh Central Jail, where he is detained, on Thursday, May 9.

"Two sets of nomination forms and other paperwork were filled in and signed by the detenue on 09.05.2024," Sheoran said, adding that the jail superintendent will administer the oath to Singh as per legal provisions and issue a certificate for receipt of the oath, which will then be sent to the Returning Officer at the 03-Khadoor Sahib (Punjab) parliamentary constituency.

Sheoran also noted that Singh could request the oath to be administered once his nomination form has been submitted to the Returning Officer.

In April 2023, Singh was arrested and detained under the NSA, and a second detention order was passed against him in March by the District Magistrate of Amritsar. He is contesting the Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate from the Sri Khadoor Sahib constituency in Punjab.

Singh's plea alleged that despite the Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, writing to the Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer, Tarn Taran, to facilitate his nomination, the State of Punjab and the District Magistrate, Amritsar, had not issued further instructions to enable him to file his nomination.
