Jal Board Fixes Revised Water Tariffs

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water & Sewerage Board or the Jal Board fixed the revised the water tariff in a meeting held recently.     

As per the revised tariff, the domestic tariff from 0-10,000 litres per month has been fixed at Rs 22, while the consumption of 10,001-20,000 litres per month will be charged at Rs 28. Further, 20,001-30,000 litres per month will be charged at Rs 32.

Additionally, for commercial tariffs, 0-30,000 litres has been fixed at Rs 100. The new tariffs will come into force with immediate effect.

It is to be mentioned that a few Guwahatians have also complained that they have the connections but are yet to receive any water supply for the past several months and that they have been dependent on water tankers for a long time.    

Water scarcity has been a perennial problem in Guwahati. Further, The Japan International Cooperation Agency-assisted (JICA) water supply project in Guwahati has missed several of its deadlines and there is uncertainty over when the project will be commissioned.  

JICA is assisting a water supply project in the Northern Guwahati region as well as in South Central Guwahati, the project was initiated to ensure uninterrupted 24X7 water supply to the respective regions of the city. Officials said that the entire project is expected to be to be completed approximately by 2020.
