IT dept seizes Rs 7.33 crore cash in northeast

GUWAHATI: The income tax department has seized a total of Rs 7.33 crores from across the northeast region since March 10- when the model code of conduct came into force.

"The seizure of unexplained cash in this brief period exceeds the Rs. 1.21 crore seized during the 2014 general elections. Nearly 75 of seizures were done in the past two weeks and include operations based on independent intelligence against moneylenders and interceptions at airports by the IT Directorate's Air Intelligence Units," said Sanjay Bahadur, IT Principal Director of the northeast region.

The officials further informed that they have tightened scrutiny of the election expenditure with the ongoing general elections.

The income tax department has identified ‘high risk areas’ and have deployed personnel close to these areas. Currently, 55 surveillance teams have been put in place across northeast in 112 districts.
