Injured archer Shivangini shifted to ICU

GUWAHATI: Shivangini Gohain, the 12-year-old archer from Dibrugarh, who was injured during a practice session on Thursday, was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on January 10.

The incident had taken place during a regular training session at Chabua in Dibrugarh district.

Shivangini was airlifted to AIIMS on January 9 and had to undergo a surgery early morning on Friday to remove the arrow. As per reports, the arrow had damaged her shoulder bone and had affected a part of her neck, spinal cord, and left lung.

As per reports, Deepak Gupta, a professor of pediatric neurosurgery at AIIMS said, “We started the surgery in the morning at 6, which lasted for three and a half hours. We have successfully removed the arrow. The patient is stable now and shifted to ICU for observation.”

As per information the arrow was 0.5 cm in front of the spinal cord and was touching the vertebral artery which supplies blood to the brain stem.

Shivangi, daughter of Birinchi Gohain of Chabua’s Deodhai village, has been practising archery since the age of nine. She has participated and won in a number of tournaments. Recently, she participated in the 65th National School Games Archery Championship organised by the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) at Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh.

Earlier Sports Secretary, R S Julaniya said that the Sports Authority of India (SAI) will bear all the expenses of the archer's treatment.
