Indian Railways to connect major Northeast cities by 2020

GUWAHATI: The Indian Railways will connect major northeastern cities, including the capital cities of all the seven states, excluding Sikkim, as part of a big connectivity push in the region.

According to a report by Swarajya, this push for connectivity is a result of a greater focus on the northeastern states under the current government. The average budget allotment to these states per year for the development of rail infra increased by 161 percent to Rs. 5,531 crore in 2014-2019 as compared to Rs. 2,121 crore between 2009-2014.

In Assam, a robust railway network already exists and its connectivity to Arunachal Pradesh has been boosted by the opening of Bogibeel bridge.
