GUWAHATI: Guwahati residents have opined that the constant construction of bridges and foot-over bridges at several locations of Guwahati has led to the disruption in the established routes of city buses. The rerouting of such a large number of buses through other narrow roads has often left the daily traffic in the city paralysed.
Officials of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) stated that although the routes are demarcated, the Transport Authority, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation, and the Traffic police are compelled to divert them in many cases, either for a short period or until the construction of a particular infrastructure is completed. This often leads to traffic confusion and congestion. They further added the same cannot be effectively resolved until all construction has ended.
The RTA currently has 531 buses plying in 20 routes in Guwahati. There are about additional 100 buses under ASTC plying on 20 routes.
