A resident of Maligaon, speaking to GPlus said, “Last month two persons came on a scooty and snatched my mobile phone. This is very common in our area. I immediately filed an FIR at the Jalukbari police station. Thankfully, the police apprehended the thieves one week later and I got my phone back.”

Mantu Das, a resident of the Pandu railway colony says, “Many a time, I have seen youngsters sitting on the railway tracks taking drugs and consuming alcohol. I still wonder where they get all this stuff from.”

An official from the Jalukbari Police Station cited, “Maligaon has seen a surge in the number of drug-related cases in the past four months. We have caught many individuals with banned drugs such as heroin among others.  Last week we apprehended two persons carrying banned drugs with them. Again, acting on a tip-off, a few individuals trying to smuggle drugs were apprehended by the Jalukbari police last month.”

Another source from the police station said, “We also come across robbery, theft, and burglary cases. A few days back we nabbed two persons responsible for cellphone snatching across the area. We recovered five cellphones from them and handed these over to the rightful owners."

This is not just a situation of Maligaon alone, but the malaise prevails across other areas of Guwahati as well. Although the authorities have been taking strict action, the problem refuses to go away.
