The ITMS underneath the Bishnu Ram flyover is a constant cause of concern for motorists and pedestrians, notorious for causing traffic jams daily, especially at peak hours. The traffic light opens for a mere 15 seconds for the vehicles joining Ulubari from South Sarania road and stops for a whopping 120 seconds. This imbalance of timing of ITMS causes huge traffic mismanagement, coupled with the heavy load of vehicles on that road. The width of the road and improper civic sense also add to this issue.

Many two-wheelers here also wait on the wrong side of the road divider. This issue is mainly due to the long waiting times of the traffic light at the Ulubari Flyover for the vehicles coming in from South Sarania. This causes the two-wheelers to pile up and line on the other side of the divider so as to get a chance at crossing the signal early. This causes a huge mayhem in that area especially during peak hours such as school and office times. This also in-turn causes issues for the oncoming traffic, reducing the space for them to pass and hence contributing to the jam.

Talking to GPlus, a senior traffic police official said, “The ITMS light timings are pre-planned and kept as per the traffic inflow. This minimal timing for the Sarania keeps the traffic coming in from G.S Road under proper flow. Otherwise, there will be a mismanagement in that section if the timing is increased here. However, this is disturbed by the improper practices of commuters and motorists. They violate traffic rules which at times lead to major congestion. Such needs to be kept in check and we too try to manage these, for proper traffic flow in this area.”

For the time being, it however remains to be seen as to how the people of the city and authorities tackle this daily ongoing issue throughout the area.
